Uses for Curtains and Drapes
Curtains are an elegant way to decorate one’s home, and this is what
most people typically think of as the use for curtains when they come to mind. Curtains are available in many
different styles and can drastically change the look of a room with the simple changing of curtain style, color,
or fabric.
Curtains are available in styles that cover the
entire length of the window, stopping at the floor of the room; some styles decorate the upper half of a
window; some styles are heavy and thick; some styles are made from sheer fabrics such as lace and
tulle.
Another use for curtains is to block the sun from one’s room and create
a darker environment. These curtains, known as blackout curtains, are especially popular for use in bedrooms.
Often, children have trouble falling asleep when it is still light outside, and in many parts of the world, it
is still light out at certain times of the year well past children’s bedtimes.
Blackout curtains can be used to create a dark room and help children
get to sleep. Blackout curtains are also a good choice for bedrooms that face toward the rising sun, keeping the
bedroom dark well past sunrise and allowing the inhabitants to sleep later.
Finally, curtains are used to create more privacy in a room with
exterior windows. The privacy level desired will dictate the thickness and size of the curtains. If the curtains
are being used in a bedroom or bathroom, curtains made of a completely opaque material are preferable as they
prevent any outsiders from being able to look into the room.
For rooms such as a kitchen or sitting room, sheer curtains or curtains
that cover just part of the window are popular, since they provide privacy but do not block all light from the
room. They also avoid the need to be constantly opened and closed.
Curtains can be purchased at any store that sells home goods, including
pinch pleated drapes and
curtains. They are available at stores like Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel, at mass-market,
lower-priced stores like Ikea and Target, and at discounted home supply stores, such as Home Goods, Marshalls,
and T.J.Maxx.
Curtains can also be purchased all over the Internet; an online search
indicating the fabric, style, or color of curtains desired will yield many results at many different prices.
Looking through home decorating books will help you to narrow down the choices you are considering for the
particular room that you are planning to decorate with new curtains.
